Spring & Toxic Plants

Spring is just around the corner and your little ones may be starting to spend more time outside - it's vital their space is safe and secure, and early Spring is the ideal time to check the area for unsafe plants!

There are many plants that are dangerous to rabbits and guinea pigs, and whilst you may think they know the difference between good plants and bad, they often don't.

Worry not - you don't need to be a botanist to figure this out! There are many great resources on the web to help you identify what needs pulling out and what can be eaten, and we've highlighted some of our favourite sites below for your reference.

Plus there's a few 'rules of thumb' that are easy to follow:-

  • Plants originating from bulbs, like daffodils, snowdrops and hyacinths are NOT safe
  • Indoor plants are generally NOT safe
  • If you're not 100% sure a plant is on the safe list, assume it's not safe
  • When checking out what is safe or dangerous, only use reputable resources, like The Rabbit Welfare Association, veterinary sites, MediRabbit for example, and not chat room types of resources where information may not be exact, or could be misunderstood.

There's nothing better than seeing your little ones enjoying a fresh clump of something yummy you've just 'harvested' from nature - after all, it is what Mother Nature designed rabbits to eat, but do your homework first and ensure what your little ones have access to is nutritious, healthy, clean and safe!
